This chapter begins with Eliezer receiving a medical checkup to see what work he will be required to do. Along with his father Eliezer is required to work in a warehouse with electrical equipment. While working in the warehouse Eliezer becomes friends with two brothers named Yossi and Tibi. Eliezer begins to hum Zionist, and discuss Palestine with them. Once liberated they all plan to leave Europe and go to Palestine.

One day the air raid sirens go off and the prisoners are forced to go into their Barracks. The SS officers are commanded to shoot anybody that leaves. During the raid a man crawls out of his barrack and heads for two pots of soup that were left unattended. He dips his head in to drink and is instantly shot. After the raid sirens go off the Jews are hopeful that the bombs destroyed Buna.

Shortly after the SS officers setup gallows and begin to hang people during roll call. The hanging that affected everybody the most was the hanging of the two children that many people liked. They were being hung for suspecting to blow up a power plant. While the child stood on the platform before he was to be hung his face resembled a sad angel. A man standing behind Eliezer said “Were is God?” When The SS officer pulled the platform away the child was so light that he didn’t die for a half hour. The Jews wept at the sight of his body hanging there and for the rest of the day. Eliezer said that his soup tasted like corpses that day.

This section of the book begins with Eliezer getting separated from his mother and sisters. As he watches them go he holds onto his father to make sure that they are not split apart. A prisoner approaches Eliezer and his father to tell them to lie about their ages. Eliezer says that he is 18, and his dad says that he is 40.

The Jews are ten forced to march past Dr.Mengele so he can p;ck the ones that would live, and the ones that would die. Eliezer and his father survive this test only to be told that they were going to die in the crematory. As they make the slow walk towards the flames Eliezer feels angered at God for letting this happen to them. As the walk continues a truck pulls up to a flaming pit and babies are thrown into the pit of fire. At the last second the line turns and the Jews are saved from the flames, but they look over the pit and see the faces of the burning babies.

By tis point in the story Elizer has lost faith in God and huananity for the horrors that he has indured. An example of his lack in humanity is when his father is getting beaten by the Nazis, Eliezer does nothing to try and help him. Eliezer says that he did not help him for he has lost faith, and if he had gotten beaten a day sooner he would have helped.
